In her Juilliard lectures, Marsha Norma said no work can be divorced from the specific era in which it was written. She cautions playwrights against revisiting prior work later, well past the point when the crucible of creation was so personal and specific. I’m not so presumptuous as to speculate about that impacting this piece, but I agree that Woods was written in the heartbreaking eighties, undoubtedly shaped by the crushing reality of random deaths, so often among the young.
