I saw Samonsky in Drood. He talked to a group of us at the stage door, and someone asked him about his performance on the taped production of South Pacific for PBS. If I remember correctly, he said he had gotten almost no rehearsal or direction before that performance. He sort of apologized to us, admitting that he was really bad or he may have even said "Yeah, I sucked" or something like that. Nice guy, very down to earth.

I saw him some years later as Captain Phoebus in The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Papermill. Fine score, well acted and sung, but really bad staging plus Michael Arden was way too cute to play Quasimodo.
