I'm not such a fan of "The Life" as you are, but I am intrigued by what might happen when it is re-interpreted by a Black Queer theater maker. These are the kinds of risks that Encores! should be taking. And it's also important to see whether they can find a reason for Encores! to exist in the 2020s and beyond. The kinds of shows that the old-school fans keep asking for are certainly worthy of attention, but they are not works that define the current generation of theatergoers, and Encores! needs to figure out how to tap into today if they are going to live into tomorrow.
