|“I think in this case Warner Brothers should have released the movie first in theaters, then on HBOMax. They are really going to hurt Dune’s box office by showing it online at the same time as the theater run.”
And the same can probably be said for The Matrix 4, Space Jam 2, the new Hugh Jackman thriller, etc.
At the same time, Warner Bros. gets and deserves credit for kick-starting movie box office again this year, after such a long draught, with surprisingly good returns for Godzilla vs Kong, The Conjuring 3, Tom and Jerry, to a lesser extent Mortal Kombat, etc.
The HBO Max simultaneous release of all films this year was a one-time-only stunt that’s already paid huge dividends in PR and I imagine overall will even out and have been worth it in the end.
