The dancing was very important to me. The movie choreography, as A. O. Scott mentions, is problematic. The camera doesn’t record the choreography fully. Dancers are shown in a reflection in a window Usnavi is looking out of. They are doing really interesting choreography but we can’t see it clearly. Dancers are cut off at the knees or not shown because the choice was to focus on Usnavi and Vanessa. The couple dancing performed by the chorus in the show version was very exhilarating in several numbers. There’s none of that in the movie. There was a lot to like in the movie—Anthony Ramos, most of all. But the dancing was a big let down for me.
