I'm a little surprised that $96,000 wasn't raised to something higher. It was probably too low even back in 2008.
Although I don't think it's made specifically clear, I don't believe the film is supposed to be set in the present day, but rather several years ago. Anyway, the movie retains the following lyric line, sung by Usnavi: "96 G ain't enough to retire." As in the show, the amount is not presented as something that's going to make someone set for life, just a nice little windfall to maybe make a dream or two come true :-)
