|Had a completely different reaction to Ramos! LOVED HIM. The guy has talent and charisma to spare. He was wonderful, and he was the perfect Usnavi. Yes, I saw LMM and have seen several other Usnavis, and they were all good...but Ramos brought something lovely to it.
I saw IN THE HEIGHTS on Broadway and liked it well enough. I thought it was exuberant and fun, but not much more. Over the years I have seen school productions (high school and college level-- have a musical theatre performer in the family and she's been in it several times) and a few regional productions here in Atlanta, and have really enjoyed them. I think the show gets better and better the more you revisit it (the most recent production I saw was the NYU production a few years back-- in a black box theatre--and it was wonderful).
But the film really is the best version I've ever seen of it. We get to appreciate a larger than life Washington Heights, a loving community that sings, dances, struggles and sometimes triumphs, and a message of hope and celebration. I needed this a lot right now, and seeing it last night-- for my very first trip to a movie theatre since March 2020-- was the best thing ever. I'll watch it on HBO Max, too...but I'll go to a theatre to see it again.
