I'm not sure that references to Vietnam are all that obscure - but for that matter, every time I hear in the news that there's a push for troops to come back to the US, I hear a bit of "Bring The Boys Back Home" in my head. :-)
I've always loved the original album, even though to me there's a fair amount of "pitchiness" going on - but the energy and fun can't be beat.
I think the score also has a fair amount of "meta" in it, way before that was a huge thing. It's a very theatrical piece - and I think it really needs a cast that can embrace that over-the-top theatricality.
I've also done the show (a college production back in 2013) and had a fantastic time. As did the cast. And that orchestration really cooks. My "guilty pleasure" number is Thurio's Samba, which is a hoot, especially with those dirty lyrics, lol. (They're deliberately misspelled in the script, which is even funnier.)
