I think he's generally approved things when he's been consulted about them. Although even then, he reneged on a potential gay male version of Company after a reading was done a few years back. He also expressed his displeasure at an arrangement of "The Glamorous Life" done for the Judi Dench production of Night Music (which incorporated a good deal of the film version of the song) - it seems he was not consulted about that one.

I would tend to think that the Balladeer/Oswald question would really have been Weidman's decision more than Sondheim's, but I will assume that Sondheim was in on that decision also.
