Sondheim seems less concerned with changes to his own work than that PORGY AND BESS article would suggest.

He approved the first revival of SWEENEY TODD (the so-called TEENY TODD) and the one with the cast playing their own instruments. He approved the COMPANY with the cast playing their own instruments. I assume he must have been consulted on merging The Balladeer and Lee Harvey Oswald in the ASSASSINS revival. There were many changes in the INTO THE WOODS revivals, both on Broadway and in the park. The 1990's FORUM revival cut some material, I think. The A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC and first SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE revivals used much reduced orchestrations, which he must have approved. He's allowed the most recent COMPANY revival with characters changing genders and sexualities. And that's just off the top of my head.

And, Betty Buckley excepted, he seems very open to new interpretations of his songs out of context in performance and on albums. He himself rewrote material for Streisand's BROADWAY ALBUM.

I'm not sure what lead him to go so public with his thoughts on PORGY AND BESS, but I'd have advised him to not.
