|I saw WEST SIDE STORY at the Broadway and loved it. It is its own thing and obviously Scott Rudin wanted to present a completely new take on a classic and turned to non-Americans without a built-in reverence for the original Robbins staging. van Hove and his choreographer were presumably approaching the material from what is on the page and not from years of watching the movie or listening to the OBC recording. You don't have to like it and if you think it's vastly inferior to the original, then fine: that version ain't going anywhere.
It's the umbrage and offence at anyone daring to reinterpret the material that is the real offence and shows up the ignorance of so many hacks who have a platform in which to express their opinions.
Inevitably, artists and craftspeople who actually WORK in the theatre are infinitely more generous of spirit. Not everybody, but most.
