The lovable rogue is a mainstay of literature all over the world, far beyond these shores: Robin Hood, Raffles, Arsene Lupin, Autolycus, Falstaff, the Cisco Kid, the Trickster, the Saint. Tying it into American self-hatred, or hatred of Donald Trump (who I don't find lovable at all), is silly. The rogue redeemed by love is also a common literary figure. To trash all this because of your current political passions is the work of a philistine. |
