| THE FAN harkens back to SUDDEN FEAR (Joan Crawford) or MIDNIGHT LACE (Doris Day) in which plushly dressed middle-aged lady stars are stalked and driven to the edge of....terror!!!! The effort to work slasher tropes into the film hurt it, and probably disappointed any teen slasher fan who wandered into it. That said, Bacall was simply sensational in the lead. I recall Vincent Canby in the Times writing what amounted to a tribute to her. She deserved it. |
