Surreal indeed. But you were here in NYC in 1981. I was in college in the south, and saw THE FAN at a mall cinema where it was playing right next door to FRIDAY THE 13TH PART II. Both released by Paramount Pictures (cough). I think both of these movies were released within weeks of each other, if not actually the same day (I'm not gonna look that up). Hearts and Diamonds! I did see a drag queen warble that ditty on Fire Island eventually and almost died laughing because the queen informed us at the outset this:
"I take this number VERY seriously."
So there you go. THE FAN has real fans. The book was truly sensational. Pity they wimped out with the movie.
Maybe a remake? Barbra could have fun with it; she's never done a horror movie.
