For me, the pivotal line is “I always think there’s a band, kid.” Harold may have spend his adult life running this particular scam, but the only way he can bring it off is because he has a certain amount of knowledge about bands and band history so he can look like a “professor.” He may not be able to read a note of music, but the inspiration for his scam had to come from somewhere. There is a wannabe band leader deep inside him, under the con man exterior.
