SWEENEY TODD is one of my favorite works of art. I was very happy to see the DELAYED Hollywood version at the late great Ziegfeld here in NYC (opening day, and "A Little Priest" got applause, as did the wonderful blood-soaked Hammer Horror end--in a movie theatre!), but I cannot disassociate this musical from Angela Lansbury. Ever. If this had been filmed on time and with this actress, we would have the ultimate Halloween movie of all time and Ms. Lansbury would finally have won her Oscar.
Toni Collette ("Hereditary") surely can relate.
I apologize for not being over AMPAS' snub of Collette for her film. Almost the biggest one ever, up there with "Brokeback Mountain"/"Crash" and the zero nominations for Martin Scorsese's "New York, New York." I am leaving out "The Greatest Show on Earth" because I am sure someone will bring that up, and I need a nap.
