I hardly think we are the only country to “believe in the unbelievable “. People all over the world believe in many gods, angels, demons, creatures who dwell in lochs or jungles or swamps.
Music Man lays out the story beautifully. The citizens of River City are “Iowa Stubborn” ( “you can eat your fill of all the food you bring yourself”). Music transforms the town and its people. The ladies are now mad for the world’s great literature (Balzac!), the town council who have feuded for 20 years sing in beautiful harmony, the children are enthusiastic about being a part of a band. Marian asks the citizens to remember the town before Harold Hill. And she finds love. She knows what he has given the town, her family and herself. She is not blinded by his charm. She knows from the beginning who he is. She will prosper even if he leaves. She encourages him to do so. He brings music and joy with him. And to the audience, as well.
