I think if these were "innocent entertainments" they would have survived. The model they provided for marriage may have been delightful in a fiction, but was pretty awful in real life. The cultural trope that women were helpless babydolls became a cage for men and women of that generation.
The not-helpless, mature-but-flawed, women played by Meg Ryan and Reese Witherspoon are proving more durable. Thank goodness.
