Not exactly on your point, but consider what happened to Joel Grey in Cabaret.

In the original production, Grey was listed below the title and won Best Supporting Actor.

In the 1987 revival, Grey was listed above the title and supposedly would have been eligible for a Best Actor.

And it is not hard to believe that he got a lot more for the revival since he was now a Tony-award-winning actor.
