Dear BBacker: I think we're potato-potahto-ing. Yes, I am quite familiar w/the world of burlesque: no fourth wall, constant interaction w/the audience. What I am referring to as far as gratuitous adlibbing is a verbal "winking" at the audience. Call me old-fashioned but I think that when a person has spent a ridiculously astronomical amount of money on a seat for a performance of a Broadway show, that they should get EXACTLY what the director/author et al intended. I have been a Midler fan since year one and think that her "persona" is a well-crafted, calculated and nurtured one and while I have not been up to the city to see her Dolly, I think it's a terrific fit for her. However, I think that Murphy would probably be more to my taste. Sticking to the script, no "winking," etc. But, Hey!!! Dat's show biz!
