|Oh, I know Sondheim himself doesn't much like the Fredericka verses of "Glamorous Life." But I'm a sucker for them. They move me, touch me, and seem (still) to my ears, a way into Desiree's romantic midlife irresolution in a tidy, yearning, sweet-spirited way. ("Sometime this summer....!") The story ends with family unification, after all. And it's so lovely as a melody. I remember when the film came out, and about 18 months later I bought the record. Played that song probably the most. I have the NT version, and like the OP, find the sorta start-stop-ness of the stage iteration less satisfying that the film version (maybe that sequence is the single best thing in the film -- a topic we debate here at least once a year, that damned movie! To be shallow a moment: Taylor looks her best there, one shot of her on the train in some satin peach-colored Klotz duds is just staggeringly beautiful ) Just so glad it exits. The Audra version -- done in isolation -- is a keeper, too.|
