I feel like any musical in which a character plainly expressed their deepest psychological or life desire from the top of the show would be too on the nose and simplistic. Is there a good show that does a version of what you write about?

I think that - and I was taught - that the best writing is one in which a character's material and/or short-term goal (I want to win the rap battle) is their best answer to a problem they don't realize they have (I want to become a man and make my father proud) until they go through the process of achieving what they think they want.
