I would say that A) Fosca is the protagonist of "Passion", and B) "I Read" is an I Want song subtextually, in that her list of what she Does Not do is a window into what she wishes she could do.

And I would say "My Friends" is a version of an I Want song, in that Todd expresses what he will do with his razors, which is to drip blood.

Part of Sondheim's genius is how he subverts and misdirects convention while still satisfying our need for certain storytelling moments.

(And I hear you on that making a living question mark.)
